A Patrons Story . . .
Each summer two of our grandsons from Marble Falls spend a week with us. Marble Falls is north of Austin, a quaint little town that is expanding rapidly. However, there is no childrens theatre. I could call Fort Bend Theatre in advance and purchase front row seats for us and include the "in town" grandkids also. I remember one year when our granddaughter was only 3, and her mother was concerned that she would not "behave." Madi was totally enthralled with the play, and her eyes never left the stage. Where else could you take your grandchildren to a quality performance and it not "break the bank." I have supported Fort Bend Theatre for years at a minimum donation, wishing I could do more. Our grandchildren have enjoyed excellent performances that otherwise they would never have seen. I wish you a future that will offer the Fort Bend area a quality theatre without having to drive into Houston, and also give our Fort Bend actors the opportunity to perform. --Carolyn Bowden

Our HistoryFort Bend Community Theatre was founded in 1989 in Sugar Land, Texas by Frank and Karen Letts, based on the following mission statement: "Our purpose is to promote the arts and education of the arts in our community. Our goal is to provide children and families the opportunity to participate in the arts as we accomplish our goal." Productions were originally staged in a local church, but as support grew, so did the need for an exclusive location. In 1991, Fort Bend Community Theatre relocated to Westwood Mall. Productions increased to ten a year, alternating between children's shows and family fare. Acting classes began, and Tarra McCain joined the Letts' to further the education of children, teens, and adults in the pursuit of excellence in the dramatic arts. Community involvement flourished, and Fort Bend Theatre increased it's local outreach to such worldwide audiences as the Ronald McDonald House, Texas Children's Hospital, M.D. Anderson Hospital, and Richmond State School. By 1994, Fort Bend Theatre broadened its season to include daytime shows, and by 1996, enriching educational shows designed to travel to local schools were added. Currently, Fort Bend Theatre has six daytime shows a year, including a Drug Awareness Program presented during Red Ribbon Week, and an original production of "Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad" presented during Black History Month. Another new work, celebrating Hispanic Heritage, is scheduled to premiere for travel during the month of May in our 2003 season. With the closure of Westwood Mall in 1998, Fort Bend Theatre returned to its roots in Fort Bend County, where its currently located at 2815 N. Main, Stafford, Texas. Sadly, its visionary founders, the Letts, moved from Texas in August 2000, leaving a tremendous gap. Mrs. McCain was promoted from volunteer Artistic Director, to staff Artistic Director, striving to continue their good work and mission statement, and to "raise the bar" of excellence with each new artistic endeavor. New growth includes the following: collaborative works with other fine arts and educational institutions have been performed acting and musical theatre classes have increased in size and variety entertaining shows for businesses and organizations were contracted and continue to be made available FBT's first major fundraiser was successfully accomplished an original scriptwriting contest was created, further promoting local artists and their works
Community involvement, outreach, and awareness has multiplied, with new outreaches to Missouri City SnowFest, Richmond PecanFest, Ft. Bend Literacy League, Stafford Historical Society's Holiday Lighting Ceremony and Fourth of July Parade, and Sugar Land's SugarFest being supported. Over one hundred productions and over 100,000 excited audience members later, Fort Bend Theatre continues to thrive, expand, and strive for excellence and education in the arts, while presenting unique opportunities for cultural enrichment to all of Fort Bend County.
